I chose the Markhor (national animal) & it's phenomenal horns to celebrate Pakistan Independence day.
Rosalind Franklin
An illustration for British Biophysicist Rosalind Franklin. Franklin contributed vital research to the study of DNA at the same time as Francis Crick, James Watson & Maurice Wilkins. Without her consent Wilkins showed Franklin's research to Watson. All three men were awarded the Nobel prize for Physiology in 1961 yet Crick admitted Franklin's data "was the data we actually used".

Cat in an Empty Apartment
An illustration to celebrate the life of Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska.
A Cat in an Empty Apartment
Die? One doesn't do that to a cat.
What's a cat to do
in an empty apartment?
Climb the walls?
Brush up against the furniture?
It seems nothing has changed
yet everything's different.
It seems nothing has moved,
yet there's more space.
And the lamp doesn't light up in the evening.
There are footsteps on the staircase,
but they are not the same.
And the feeding hand
is neither.
Something doesn't start
at its usual time.
Something doesn't happen
as it should.
Somebody lived on and on here
then suddenly disappeared
and is stubbornly absent.
All the closets have been examined.
All the shelfs explored.
Excavations under the carpet were fruitless.
Even the rule was broken
and papers scattered everywhere.
What's more to be done?
Just sleeping and waiting.
But just let him return.
Just let him show up.
He'll learn
one doesn't do that to a cat.
He will be approached
slowly,
as if reluctantly,
on very offended paws.
And there'll be no jumping at first,
no meowing.

The 100th Tour De France
The illustration for the 100th Tour De France seemed like a great opportunity to unify design, illustration and animation. From rough drawings to finished animation the choices boiled down to combining 2 key views of a rider. At one point there was no bike at all!
Concerning the event itself the illustration was a great opportunity to take the tour back in time to an era of moustaches and wheel tubing over shoulders! It's a moving graphic that points to the future yet recognises the nostalgia and heritage of early 20th century tour posters.
Kobayashi Issa
The one breath haiku of Kobayahi Issa are remarkable. With over 3000 poems to choose from I opted for these four to illustrate.
Walking the High Line- New York
Despite drizzly weather I thoroughly enjoyed walking the High Line in New York. The old train track offers a unique perspective (up AND down) as you walk the city via elevation. When the rain was at it's heaviest I sheltered under the track. Sunday was a complete wash out & a great chance to have my MIND BLOWN at the Met. With a dying pen I caught the melee in the main entrance.
Saul Bass animated for Google
I've always been interested in the work of Saul Bass and was delighted to get the opportunity to celebrate his birthday on the Google homepage. From the outset I wanted to celebrate a number of his film credits in succinct succession, as well as a nod in the direction of his poster work. Film rights can be problematic so I wasn't completely sure of the order of cutting, but as it turned out every studio was a pleasure to work with. Corresponding with Jennifer Bass was inspirational and led to hearing that Saul Bass was a Dave Brubeck fan. Although I hadn't synched animation to music we found a Brubeck track that managed to hit the right notes. Again, the Brubeck estate were superb to work with.
I drew everything in Illustrator before animating in After Effects. I hope I found a way to merge Google with Bass' graphic sensibilities. You'll be able to see the doodle on your countries homepage on Tuesday 7th and Wed 8th May 2013, and also HERE

Dogpatch - SF
Earlier in the year intrepid photographer Lucy Hamblin and I infiltrated abandoned buildings in the Dogpatch- SF.
Work
Dipping my toe into animation. First test piece in Flash. While we're on the subject of work if anyone wants to buy me and send me around the world painting for them just let me know. You keep all the paintings. Personal artists are all the rage.

My illustration for todays homepage in the US. My inspiration came from local people and graffiti here in SF.
London Undergound
My illustration for the 150th anniversary of the tube. This is a slightly different version from today's homepage. We didn't run with the character bottom right because the underground logo on his hat was trademarked. TFL were great to work with in every aspect, congratulations on 150 years of service as well as Harry Beck's wonderful iconic map.
